Getting Started

What is a triathlon?

Three disciplines: Swim-Bike-Run and in that order. Training in three sports, excelling in one!

Triathlon combined

Thinking about doing a triathlon?

How do I get started?    How do you train?    What to wear ?   What races to do?

These are all questions we all asked on our journey to becoming a Triathlete.

Step 1

  • Before embarking on any physical activity it is advisable to have a medical check with your doctor or physician.
  • Discuss with partner or spouse – having the support of loved ones will make it much easier to train
  • When is the race ie how far in advance so you can plan your training
  • Where – travel distance, overnight stay
  • What  distance race – sprint, standard, half, ironman
  • Price – look for locally run races by local clubs, these are often run by like-minded athletes at a very low price. Great atmosphere and a good starting point.

Step 2

  • Equipment required for racing before you embark on spending your hard earned cash, check with friends to see if they have some equipment to get you started; or look out for special deals online.
  • Swim – for pool training you will need bathers for training, swim goggles, swim cap; for open water you will also need a wetsuit
  • Bike – shoes, helmet, gloves, pump, inner tubes, drinks bottle, back reflector light, light jacket, race belt  (for any queries on the type of bike, cycling equipment or any repairs visit www.tj-cycles.com
  • Run- shoes, socks, cap, possible sunglasses.

Step 3

  • Training plan:  your training plan will depend on the  distance and on your current fitness levels
  • Personal coaching  – contact us to find out more coaching for beginners, intermediates, advanced triathlon coaching
  • Join a triathlon club and train with like minded people
